Knowing Our Numbers
Exercise 1.2
1). A book exhibition was held for four days in a school. The number of tickets sold at the counter on the first, second, third and final day was respectively 1094, 1812, 2050 and 2751. Find the total number of tickets sold on all four days.
The number of tickets sold on the first day = 1094
The number of tickets sold on the second day = 1812
The number of tickets sold on the third day = 2050
The number of tickets sold on the fourth day = 2751
Total number of tickets sold on all four days =
1094+1812+2050+2751
Ans: Total number of tickets sold on all four days = 7707
2). Shekhar is a famous cricket player. He has so far scored 6980 runs in test matches. He wishes to complete 10,000 runs. How many more runs does he need?
Runs scored by Shekhar in test matches = 6980
Number of runs he wished to complete = 10000
Runs needed by Shekhar to complete his wish
= 10000 – 6980
Runs needed by Shekhar to complete his wish= 3020
3). In an election, the successful candidate registered 5,77,500 votes and his nearest rival scored 3,48,700 votes. By what margin did the successful candidate win the election?
Votes scored by successful candidate = 5,77,500
Votes scored by rival candidate = 3,48,700
The winning margin of successful candidate
= 5,77,500 – 3,48,700
= 2,28,800
Ans: The winning margin of successful candidate = 2,28,800
4). Kirti bookstore sold books worth 2,85,891 in the first week of June and books worth 4,00,768 in the second week of the month. How much was the sale for the two weeks together? In which week was the sale greater and by how much?
Books sold in the first week of June = 2,85,891
Books sold in the second week of June = 4,00,768
Total sales of the two weeks = 2,85,891 + 4,00,768
= 6,86,659
4,00,768 – 2,85,891 = 1,14,877
The sales of the first week are greater by 1,14,877
Ans: Total sales of the two weeks = 6,86,659
The sales of the first week are greater by 1,14,877
5). Find the difference between the greatest and the least 5-digit number that can be written using the digits 6,2,7,4,3 each only once.
Greatest 5-digit number that can be formed = 76432
smallest 5-digit number that can be formed = 23467
difference = 76432 –23467
= 52965
6). A machine on average, manufactures 2,825 screws a day. How many screws did it produce in the month of January 2006?
Number of screws produced in a day = 2825
Number of days in January 2006 = 31
Number of screws produced in January 2006 = 2825 X 31
= 87,575
Ans: Number of screws produced in January 2006 = 87,575
7). A merchant had 78,592 with her. She placed an order for purchasing 40 radio sets at 1200 each. How much money will remain with her after the purchase?
Amount with the merchant = Rs 78,592
Price of 1 radio set = Rs 1200
Number of Radio sets = 40
Total cost of radio sets = Price of 1 radio X Number of radio sets
= 1200 X 40
= (12 X 4) X (100 X 10)
= 48 X 1000
= 48000
Amount left with merchant = 78592 – 48000
= 30592
Ans: Amount left with merchant = Rs 30592
8). A student multiplied 7236 by 65 instead of multiplying by 56. By how much was his answer greater than the correct answer. (hint: do you need both the multiplications?)
The difference in the multiplying number = 65 – 56 = 9
The difference in the answers = 7236 X 9
= 65124
9). To stich a shirt, 2m 15cm cloth is needed. Out of 40 m cloth, how many shirts can be stiched and how much cloth will remain? (Hint: convert data in cm)
Cloth required to stich a shirt = 2 m 15 cm = 200cm+15cm
= 215 cm
Total length of cloth available = 40 m = 40 X 100 cm
= 4000 cm
Number of shirts stiched = 4000 ÷ 215
= 18 shirts
Cloth remained = remainder
= 130 cm
=100 + 30 (100cm = 1m)
= 1 m 30 cm
10). Medicine is packed in boxes, each weighing 4 kg 500g. How many such boxes can be loaded in a van which cannot carry beyond 800 kg?
Weight of the medicine box = 4 kg 500 g
= 4 X 1000 + 500 (1kg = 1000 g)
= 4000 + 500 = 4500g
Maximum weight carried by the van = 800 kg
= 800 X 1000
= 800000g
Number of boxes loaded in the van = 800000 ÷ 4500
= 177 boxes
Ans: Number of boxes loaded in the van = 177 boxes
11). The distance between the school and a student’s house is 1 km 875m. Every day she walkEd both ways. Find the total distance covered by her in six days.
The distance between the school and house = 1 km 875 m
= 1.875 km
Distance in both the ways = 1.875 X 2
= 3.750 km
Number of days = 6
Total distance covered by the student in 6 days = 3.750 X 6
= 22.500 km
= 22 km 500m.
Ans: Total distance covered by the student in 6 days is 22 km 500 m
12). A vessel has 4 litres and 500 ml of curd. In how many glasses, each of 25ml capacity can it be filled?
Capacity of the vesseL = 4 litre 500ml
= 4 X 1000 + 500 (1lit= 1000ml)
= 4000+500
= 4500ml
Capacity of the each glass = 25ml
Number of glasses required = 4500 ÷ 25
= 180 glasses
Ans: Number of glasses required = 180
