Do you know any poems about fish?

When you think of fishes what shapes come to your mind.

As I think of fishes shapes like circle, oval, triangle comes to my mind.

Try to use a square and a triangle to draw a fish.

Page 2

Fishes can have very different sizes. The smallest fish is about 1 cm long. How long is the biggest fish you can imagine 18 m

How many times longer is your big fish than the smallest fish?

Length of smallest fish = 1 cm

Length of biggest fish = 18 m

1 metre = 100 cm

18 metre = 18 X 100 cm

              = 1800 cm

Therefore, the biggest fish is about 1800 times greater than the smallest fish.

About how many kilograms do you weigh 25 kg (Each student will write their weight)

So 12 children like you put together will weigh about 300 kg

  12 X 25 = 300 kg

About how much more does the whale shark weigh than 12 children like you put together?

Weight of the Whale shark = 16000 kg

Weight of 12 children = 300 kg

Difference of the weight = 16000 – 300

                                     = 15700 kg

The weight of the whale shark is 15700 kg more than the weight of the 12 children.

The logboat travels about 4 km in one hour.

a). How long will they take to go a distance of 10 km?

The distance traveled by logboat in 1 hour = 4 km

The distance traveled by logboat in 1/2 hour = 2 km

The distance travelled by logboat in 2 hour = 8 km

  8 km + 2 km = 10 km

time = 2 hour + half hour

Therefore, logboat takes 2 and half hours to travel 10 km.

b). Guess how far you can go in one hour if you walk fast?

We can walk 5 km in one hour.

Page 7

Motorboats travel faster. The speed is about 20 km in one hour.

a). How far would be the motorboats go in three and a half hours?

The speed of the motorboat is 20 km in one hour

The distance traveled by motorboat is 1 hour = 20 km

The distance traveled by motorboat in 2 hours = 40 km

The distance traveled by motorboat in 3 hours = 60 km

The distance traveled by motorboat in 1/2 hour = 10 km

Therefore the distance traveled by motorboat in 2 and

                          half hours = 60 + 10 = 70 km

b). How much time will they take to go 85 km?

The speed of the motorboat is 20 km in one hour

The distance traveled by motorboat is 1 hour = 20 km

The distance traveled by motorboat in 2 hours = 40 km

The distance traveled by motorboat in 3 hours = 60 km

The distance traveled by motorboat in 4 hours = 80 km

The distance traveled by motorboat in 1/2 hour = 10 km

The distance traveled by motorboat in 1/4 hour = 5 km

The time taken by motorboat to cover 85 km = 4 + ¼ hours

                                        (¼ hours = 60 ÷ 4 = 15 minutes)

                                                            = 4 hours and 15 min

                                                      = 140 kg

ii). catch of fish in 1 trip of long-tail boat = 600 kg

    catch of fish in 7 trips of long-tail boat = 600 kg X 7

                                                          = 4200 kg

iii). catch of fish in 1 trip of motor boat =  800 kg

catch of fish in 7 trips of motor boat = 800 kg X 7

                                                        = 5600 kg

iv). catch of fish in 1 trip of machine boat = 6000 kg

catch of fish in 7 trips of machine boat = 6000 kg X 7

                                                              = 42000 kg

b). About how far can a motor boat go in 6 hours?

Speed of the motorboat = 20 km per hour

The distance traveled by the motorboat in 1 hour = 20 km

The distance traveled by the motorboat in 6 hours = 20 X 6

                                                                               = 120 km

c). If a long tail boat has to travel 60 km how long will it take?

Speed of the long tail boat = 12 km per hour

The time taken by the long tail boat to travel 12 km = 1 hour

a). What other things have you heard of in lakhs?

I had heard about the population of a city, number of vehicles, cost of vehicles, number of covid patients in lakhs.

b). Write the number one thousand. Now write one hundred thousand. So how many zeroes are there in the number one lakh? Easy, isn’t it?

One thousand = 1000

One hundred thousand= 100,000

Number of zeroes in one lakh = 5

c). There are about two lakh boats in our country. Half of them are without a motor. What is the number of boats with a motor? Write it.

Total boats in our country = 200000

Half of the boats are without motor

Half of two lakhs = ½ X 200000

                    = 100000 (one lakh)

Boats with motor = 200000 – 100000

                             = 100000

d). About one-fourth of the boats with a motor is big machine boats. How many thousand machine boats are there? Come on, try to do it without writing it down.

Number of boats with motor = 100000 (one lakh)

Number of big machine boats are ¼ of one lakh

                                              = ¼ X 100000  (divide lakh by 4)

                                               = 25000

Number of big machine boats = 25000

1). Where have you heard of a crore? What was the number used for?

I had heard about crore for the population of the states, the population of the countries, cost of big projects like dams, malls, etc.

2). Try writing the number one crore.

One crore = 1,00,00,000

Page 11

Mini-“ come here! Come here! Take Sardines at Rs 40 a kg”

Gracy-“ Never so cheap! Get sword fish for Rs 60 a kg”

Floramma sells prawns for Rs 150 a kg.

Karuthamma sells squid for Rs 50 a kg.

Look, Fazilla can hardly carry this big kingfish! She says, “This fish weighs 8 kg. I will sell the whole for Rs 1200”

Practice Time

1). At what price per kg did Fazilla sell the kingfish?

Weight of the fish = 8 kg

Total cost of fish = Rs 1200

Cost per kg = 1200 ÷ 8

Cost per kg = Rs 150

2). Floramma had sold 10 kg prawns today. How much money did she get for that?

Cost of prawns per kg = Rs 150

Weight of prawns sold  = 10 kg

Money received by Floramma = 150 X 10

                                              = Rs 1500

3). Gracy sold 6 kg sword fish. Mini has earned as much money as Gracy. How many kg of sardines did Mini sell?

Cost of sword fish = Rs 60

Weight of sword fish sold =  6 kg

Money received by Gracy = 60 X 6

                                       = Rs 360

Money received by Mini = Money received by Gracy

                                   = Rs 360

Cost of Sardines = Rs 40

 Weight of Sardines sold = 360 ÷ 40

                                       = 9 kg

4). Basheer has RS 100. He spends one-fourth of the money on squid and another three-fourth on prawns.

Money with Basheer = Rs 100

One-fourth of Rs 100 = ¼ X 100

                                 = 25

Three-fourths of Rs 100 = 100 – 25

                                     = Rs 75

a). How many kilograms of squid did he buy?

Cost of squid = Rs 50

Amount paid for squid = RS 25

Kilograms of squid bought by Basheer = 25 ÷ 50

                                                         = ½ kg

b). How many kilograms of prawns did he buy?

Cost of prawns = RS 150

Amount paid for prawns = Rs 75

Kilograms of prawns purchased by Basheer = 75 ÷ 150

                                               = ½ kg

Fazilla writes the things they need to buy to begin. See the table for the cost of each item and the number of items they want to buy. Find the total cost?

Item Price of each Number of items cost
Borewell for fresh water Rs 3000 1
Bamboo rack for fish drying Rs 2000 20
Cement tank Rs 1000 4
Tray and knife Rs 300 20
bucket Rs 75 20

Total cost to set up the factory =

Price of borewell = Rs 3000

Number of borewells = 1

Cost of borewell = 3000 X 1

                        = Rs 3000

Price of bamboo rack = Rs 2000

Number of bamboo racks = 20

Cost of bamboo rack = 2000 X 20

                                = Rs 40000

Price of cement tank = Rs 1000

Number of cement tanks = 4

 Cost of cement tank = 1000 X 4

                               = Rs 4000

Price of tray and knife = Rs 300

Number of tray and knife = 20

Cost of tray and knife = 300 X 20

                                  = Rs 6000

Price of bucket = Rs 75

Number of buckets = 20

Cost of bucket = 75 X 20

                       = Rs 1500

Item Price of each Number of items cost
Borewell for fresh water Rs 3000 1 3000
Bamboo rack for fish drying Rs 2000 20 40000
Cement tank Rs 1000 4 4000
Tray and knife Rs 300 20 6000
bucket Rs 75 20 1500

Total cost to set-up the factory = 54500

When fresh fish is dried it becomes 1/3 of its weight. In one month they plan to dry 6000 kg of fresh fish. How much dried fish will they get in a month?

Weight of dried fish = 1/3 of its weight

Weight of fresh fish = 6000 kg

Weight of dried fish = 1/3 X 6000

                               = 2000 kg

The amount of dried fish is 2000 kg

Page 14

Floramma – let us calculate for 6 kg of fresh fish

We buy fresh fish for Rs 15 per kg
We sell dried fish for Rs 70 per kg

We dry 6 kg of fresh fish to get    2 kg dried fish.

For 6 kg fresh fish we have to pay 6 X 15 = Rs 90

We will sell 2 kg dried fish and get 2 X 70 = Rs 140

So if we dry 6 kg fresh fish we will earn 140 – 90 = Rs 50

But if we dry 6000 kg we can earn Rs 50 X 1000 = Rs 50000 in one month.

Page 15

Jhansi- I found that for 6000 kg fish we would need 1500 salt every month! Its price is Rs 2 per kg.

Monthly costs:

a). salt                          1500 X 2 = RS 3000

b). Packing and bus charges = Rs 3000

so the total monthly cost of drying and selling the fish = Rs 6000

Fazilla- That sounds very good! Our calculations tell us that every month our Bank will earn Rs 44,000.
